Taking to the stage amid seeping electric guitar feedback, Japanese garage rock trio The Monorals blazed through a half-hour set yesterday evening at the Notting Hill Arts Club.
An enthusiastic crowd rooted on the Tokyo natives as they crashed through Ramones-esque, four-chord cuts interspersed with elated chorus sections recalling Dinosaur Jr. The set included “You Should Be Your Light” and “Surf On,” from the band’s 2009 Surf 4 Fuzz EP, as well as some new material.
It was blaring, upbeat and just plain fun.
